In May 2015, an Estyn core inspection found the school to be “adequate”. A monitoring visit in 2018 found that the school had made insufficient progress against a number of recommendations and was placed in Special Measures. Estyn made seven recommendations, which varied from improving standards, and improving teaching and learning, but with a specific recommendation to address leadership across the board in the school.

Engaging with Higher Apprenticeships has helped Newtown High School to move out of special measures by improving leadership and management, teaching and learning standards.

The school, which has 1,200 pupils, was put into special measures following an  Estyn inspection in 2015 when weaknesses were identified in leadership and management, self-assessment and overall planning for continuous improvement.

To address these issues, 18 staff members have either completed or are working towards a Higher Apprenticeship (Levels 4 and 5) in Leadership and Management delivered by Cardiff-based training provider Portal Training.

Newport County in the Community Fit and Fed June 2022

Portal Training was delighted to sponsor County in the Community’s “Fit and Fed” half term event on Monday, 30th May.

The event, which was held at Lliswerry Pond, Newport, attracted 36 young people from 5 schools, for a day of fun, physical activity and a healthy lunch
